01 — The O&M Hostage Situation

When an EPC contractor builds a water plant, they often install premium Western-branded membranes (e.g., DOW BW30-400 or Toray TM720D). Five years later, when the plant operator needs to replace those 120 elements, the original supplier dictates the price. Because operators fear that a different brand won't fit into the existing pressure vessels, they reluctantly pay a 50% to 80% premium for the exact same logo.

This is a manufactured fear. The industrial water treatment industry operates on strict, universal dimensional standards. The physical fiberglass shell that holds the membrane (the Pressure Vessel) is manufactured by independent companies like Codeline or Protec. These vessels are built to accept any standard 8-inch element, regardless of the brand name printed on the tape.

02 — The 8040 Dimensional Standard (Proof it fits)

The term "8040" is not a model number; it is a universal geometric coordinate. It stands for 8.0 inches in diameter and 40.0 inches in length. If your current membrane is an 8040, a WANDONG 8040 equivalent will slide into your vessel with zero friction.

As the data proves, the physical footprint is identical down to the millimeter. The critical dimension is the Permeate Tube Inner Diameter (1.125"). Because this matches perfectly, you can reuse your existing interconnectors (the plastic tubes with O-rings that connect one membrane to the next inside the vessel).

03 — Matching the Active Area (400 vs 440 ft²)

Once you confirm the physical fit, you must match the thermodynamic performance. The two most common variants of 8040 elements are 400 ft² and 440 ft² active area.

  • 400 ft² Elements (Standard): These use a thicker 28-mil or 34-mil feed spacer. They produce slightly less water per element but are highly resistant to fouling. (WANDONG Equivalent: WD-BW-400 or WD-FR-400)
  • 440 ft² Elements (High-Yield): These pack more membrane leaves into the same 8-inch shell by using a very thin 28-mil spacer. They produce more water but foul much faster if the pre-treatment is poor. (WANDONG Equivalent: WD-BW-440)

The Downgrade Strategy: If your plant currently uses 440 ft² elements (like the BW30-440i) and you are experiencing rapid biological fouling or frequent CIP cycles, do not replace them with 440s. Downgrade to a WANDONG 400 ft² Fouling-Resistant (FR) element with a 34-mil spacer. You will lose ~10% of your max flow capacity, but you will eliminate the fouling nightmare and double the lifespan of the new elements.

04 — The ATD & Interconnector Seal

The most common failure point during a membrane retrofit is not the membrane itself, but the O-rings on the interconnectors and the Brine Seal on the element exterior.

WANDONG elements feature an interlocking Anti-Telescoping Device (ATD) on the end caps. Under high pressure (up to 600 psi for BWRO), the membrane leaves want to push forward and "telescope" out of the fiberglass shell. The ATD prevents this mechanical failure.

When installing the new elements, you must ensure the Brine Seal (the black rubber gasket on the outside of the element) is facing the feed water inlet. If installed backward, water will bypass the membrane entirely, and your product water TDS will spike instantly.

05 — The 4-Step Retrofit Execution Plan

Replacing RO elements is a precision operation. To ensure your new WANDONG elements perform flawlessly and maintain their 12-month warranty, your maintenance team must execute the following Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Step 1: Depressurization & Extraction

Safety Protocol

Ensure the high-pressure pump is locked out and tagged out (LOTO). Open permeate and brine valves to completely depressurize the vessel. Remove the end-cap retaining rings. Always push the old elements out in the direction of the feed flow (from the feed end toward the concentrate end) to avoid damaging the vessel's internal surface.

Step 2: Vessel Inspection & Cleaning

QA Check

Before loading new elements, swab the inside of the FRP pressure vessel with a mild detergent solution to remove biological slime or scale. Inspect the inner walls for deep scratches. Scratches can allow feed water to bypass the brine seal, contaminating the permeate stream.

Step 3: Directional Loading & Shimming

Precision Assembly

Lubricate the O-rings and brine seals only with glycerin or water (never use petroleum-based lubricants like Vaseline, which destroy polyamide). Load the elements into the feed end, ensuring the U-cup brine seal faces the incoming water. Install PVC shims at the concentrate end-cap to eliminate any slack, preventing the elements from hammering against the end-cap during pump startup.

Step 4: Low-Pressure Flush & Soak

Commissioning

WANDONG elements are shipped in a 1% Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS) preservative. Do not start the high-pressure pump immediately. Flush the system at low pressure (2-3 bar) for 30 minutes, directing all permeate and concentrate to the drain. Allow the elements to soak for 1 hour, then slowly ramp up the VFD to operational pressure.

Absolutely not. WANDONG elements are manufactured to the exact 8040 and 4040 industry standards. They will slide perfectly into any standard FRP or stainless steel pressure vessel (Codeline, Protec, ROPV, etc.) currently housing DOW, Toray, Hydranautics, or Suez elements.
While physically possible, it is highly discouraged. Old elements have higher resistance (lower flux) than new elements. If you put a new WANDONG element in the lead position and an old DOW element in the tail, the new element will take 80% of the hydraulic load, causing it to foul prematurely. Always replace elements in complete vessel sets.
Yes. Even though the elements are precisely 40.0 inches long, pressure vessels expand slightly under pressure. You must install PVC shims at the thrust ring (concentrate end) to eliminate any slack. If the elements can move back and forth during pump startup, the interconnectors will snap, and the O-rings will extrude.
WANDONG elements are vacuum-sealed in heavy-duty foil bags containing a 1% Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS) preservative solution. If kept in their original cardboard cartons in a cool, dry place (< 35°C, out of direct sunlight), they have a guaranteed shelf life of 12 months. Do not allow them to freeze.
If your plant is older than 12-18 months, your original mechanical warranty has likely already expired. The only warranty active is the pro-rated membrane warranty, which OEMs notoriously void anyway if your feed water SDI ever spiked above 5.0. Check the label on your current elements. If it says "BW30-400" or "TM720D-400", you have 400 ft² elements. If it says "BW30-440i", you have 440 ft² elements. However, if your plant suffers from frequent fouling, we strongly recommend downgrading from 440 ft² to a 400 ft² Fouling-Resistant (FR) element. The thicker spacer allows for much better CIP recovery.
