How the Industrial Reverse Osmosis Process Works (Engineering Details)

Step 1: 5-Stage Raw Water Pre-treatment. The process begins by pumping feed water into the multimedia filtration (Quartz Sand) and active carbon filters (ACF), controlled by automated RUNXIN® valves. This is followed by a resin softener to remove calcium/magnesium hardness. This critical industrial reverse osmosis pre-treatment stage reduces the Silt Density Index (SDI < 5) and eliminates free chlorine to protect the PA membrane from irreversible oxidation.

Step 2: Security Filtration & Chemical Dosing. Before entering the high-pressure stage, water passes through a 5μm PP melt-blown cartridge filter. To prevent inorganic scaling within the pressure vessels, a highly calibrated antiscalant dosing pump injects precise chemicals.

Step 3: High-Pressure Separation (RO Stack). Powered by premium Grundfos or CNP vertical centrifugal pumps, the pre-treated water is forced through the skid-mounted RO membrane elements at pressures up to 10-15 bar for brackish water (BWRO). The semi-permeable membranes achieve a salt rejection rate of >99.5%, separating the permeate (pure water) from the brine (concentrate).

Step 4: Ultrapure Polishing (Optional EDI). For power plants and electronics manufacturing, the first-pass permeate is sent through a second RO stack and an Electrodeionization (EDI) module, producing ultrapure water (UPW) with a resistivity exceeding 15 MΩ·cm.

Standard brackish water RO systems are designed for 65% - 75% recovery. By integrating precise antiscalant dosing and optimizing the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) of the feed water, we can safely push system recovery up to 85% without risking calcium carbonate or silica scaling on the membrane surface.
For groundwater with Iron (Fe) > 0.05 mg/L, we integrate an aeration/oxidation stage followed by Manganese Greensand filtration to precipitate and remove dissolved iron. This completely prevents severe iron fouling on the RO membrane surface.
Industrial RO systems typically consume 0.7 to 1.5 kWh/m³ depending on feed TDS. We optimize this by utilizing IE3 Premium Efficiency Grundfos pumps paired with Siemens Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), which dynamically adjust pump speed to match exact flow requirements, slashing wasted energy.
Our integrated Clean-In-Place (CIP) skid allows for a two-step chemical wash. A low-pH acid wash (e.g., Citric Acid at pH 2) is used to dissolve inorganic scaling (calcium/iron), followed by a high-pH alkaline wash (e.g., NaOH at pH 11) to remove organic biofouling and colloidal deposits.
