Process Engineer's Note: The OPEX Advantage

By dropping the operating pressure from the standard 225 PSI (BWRO) to 150 PSI (ULP), a 10,000 m³/day municipal water plant can reduce its high-pressure pump energy consumption by approximately 30%. For low-salinity surface water, ULP elements offer the fastest ROI in the industry.

// MODULE-04 / MECHANICAL COMPATIBILITY

100% Drop-In Ready.

No retrofitting required. WANDONG OEM 8040 elements adhere strictly to the global dimensional standard. They slide perfectly into any standard 8.0" FRP pressure vessel (e.g., Codeline, Protec, ROPV) utilizing your existing Anti-Telescoping Devices (ATDs) and interconnectors.

// MODULE-05 / ENGINEERING ANATOMY

Deconstructing the Low-Energy Core.

How do we achieve massive flow rates at just 150 PSI? Explore the highly permeable polyamide chemistry designed specifically for low-salinity water purification.

3-Layer Polyamide Thin-Film Composite RO Membrane Structure for ULP Elements
3-Layer Composite

1. Highly Permeable Polyamide Layer

Unlike SWRO membranes that require dense cross-linking to block high salt concentrations, the ULP active layer is chemically engineered to be highly permeable. It allows water molecules to pass through with minimal hydraulic resistance, achieving 11,000 GPD at just 150 PSI.

2. Polysulfone Microporous Support

Provides a smooth, defect-free substrate for the ultra-thin polyamide layer. It ensures structural integrity during continuous operation and chemical cleaning cycles (pH 2-12).

3. 28-mil Standard Feed Spacer

Optimized for relatively clean feed water (SDI < 5). The 28-mil spacer strikes the perfect balance between maximizing the active membrane area (up to 440 ft²) and maintaining adequate cross-flow turbulence to prevent scaling.

4. Interlocking ATD (End-Cap)

Features advanced end-cap construction with exhaust vents to mitigate hydraulic shock during system startup, drastically reducing the risk of element telescoping or mechanical damage.

// MODULE-06 / OPERATING LIMITS

Comprehensive Operating Limits.

Strict adherence to these parameters ensures optimal performance and validates the 12-month limited warranty.

Maximum Feed Silt Density Index (SDI) SDI 5
Free Chlorine Tolerance < 0.1 ppm

General Handling & Preservation

  • Keep elements moist at all times after initial wetting.
  • To prevent biological growth during prolonged system shutdowns, immerse elements in a preservative solution (e.g., 1% SMBS).
  • Avoid static permeate-side backpressure at all times.

System Startup Protocol

To prevent hydraulic shock and membrane damage during initial startup, shutdown, or cleaning, strict adherence to the following sequence is mandatory:

  • 0. Pre-treatment Verification: Ensure all upstream UF or multi-media filters are fully commissioned before loading RO elements.
  • 1. Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second timeframe.
  • 2. Permeate obtained from the first hour of operation must be discarded.

// MODULE-15 / TECHNICAL FAQ & WARRANTY

Hardcore FAQ.
Engineering-Grade Answers.

What is the difference between ULP and standard BW elements?
The primary difference is the Operating Pressure (OPEX).

Standard BW elements require 225 PSI to operate efficiently. ULP (Ultra-Low Pressure) elements use a highly permeable polyamide layer that achieves the same flow rate at just 150 PSI. If your feed water TDS is below 1500 ppm, switching to ULP elements will slash your high-pressure pump electricity costs by up to 30%.
Is WD-ULP-400 a direct replacement for DuPont XLE-440?
Yes. For maximum flow matching the XLE-440, we recommend our WD-XLE-440 model, which features the exact same 440 ft² active area and delivers 12,000 GPD at ultra-low pressure. It is a 100% physical drop-in replacement for any 8.0" FRP pressure vessel.
What is your warranty policy for OEM elements?
We provide a strict 12-Month Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty is voided if failure is caused by improper pre-treatment (Feed SDI > 5), exposure to oxidative chemicals (Free Chlorine > 0.1ppm), or operation beyond the 600 PSI limit.
My system is down. How fast can you ship via air-freight?
For standard 8040 elements in stock, we execute emergency DHL/FedEx dispatches within 48 hours. Elements typically arrive globally in 3-7 days, enabling factory operators to immediately restore their core production lines.
How do you guarantee the quality of your OEM membranes before shipping?
Every single WANDONG OEM element undergoes rigorous testing at our 50,000m² ISO 9001 facility. We perform 100% vacuum decay testing for mechanical integrity and batch-test performance (salt rejection and flow rate) according to ASTM D4516 standards. A formal QC certificate is included in every box.
What is the typical lifespan of ULP elements in municipal applications?
With proper pre-treatment (SDI < 3) and regular CIP maintenance, WANDONG ULP elements typically last 3 to 5 years in municipal tap water or light brackish water applications before requiring replacement due to natural flux decay.
