Process Engineer's Note: The 34-mil Advantage

In high-COD wastewater applications, standard 28-mil spacers trap colloidal particles and biomass, leading to exponential pressure drop (dP) increases. The 34-mil Low Differential Pressure (LDP) spacer maintains turbulent cross-flow, sweeping foulants away from the membrane surface and extending CIP intervals by up to 50%.

// MODULE-04 / MECHANICAL COMPATIBILITY

100% Drop-In Ready.

No retrofitting required. WANDONG OEM 8040 elements adhere strictly to the global dimensional standard. They slide perfectly into any standard 8.0" FRP pressure vessel (e.g., Codeline, Protec, ROPV) utilizing your existing Anti-Telescoping Devices (ATDs) and interconnectors.

// MODULE-05 / ENGINEERING ANATOMY

Deconstructing the Anti-Fouling Core.

Wastewater reuse destroys standard RO membranes within weeks. Explore the specialized architecture designed to repel organics and survive aggressive chemical cleaning.

34-mil Wide Feed Spacer in Fouling Resistant RO Membrane
34-mil Spacer + Hydrophilic Coating

1. Hydrophilic Surface Modification

Standard polyamide is naturally hydrophobic, which attracts organic foulants (like oils and proteins). Our FR series applies a proprietary hydrophilic coating to the active layer, creating a microscopic water barrier that prevents organics from adhering to the membrane.

2. 34-mil Advanced LDP Feed Spacer

The physical defense line. By increasing the spacer thickness from 28-mil to 34-mil, we significantly reduce the pressure drop across the element and allow larger colloidal particles to pass through without getting trapped in the mesh.

3. Polysulfone Microporous Support

Engineered to withstand 600 PSI of continuous compaction. Tolerates aggressive Clean-In-Place (CIP) protocols across a massive pH 1-13 range without degrading.

4. Interlocking ATD (End-Cap)

Eliminates traditional O-ring extrusion risks. The Anti-Telescoping Device prevents permeate contamination even under pressure surges typical in industrial plant startup sequences.

General Handling & Preservation

  • Keep elements moist at all times after initial wetting.
  • To prevent biological growth during prolonged system shutdowns, immerse elements in a preservative solution (e.g., 1% SMBS).
  • Avoid static permeate-side backpressure at all times.

System Startup Protocol

To prevent hydraulic shock and membrane damage during initial startup, shutdown, or cleaning, strict adherence to the following sequence is mandatory:

  • 0. Pre-treatment Verification: Ensure all upstream UF or multi-media filters are fully commissioned before loading RO elements.
  • 1. Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second timeframe.
  • 2. Permeate obtained from the first hour of operation must be discarded.

// MODULE-15 / TECHNICAL FAQ & WARRANTY

Hardcore FAQ.
Engineering-Grade Answers.

What makes the FR series different from standard BW elements?
Two critical differences:

1. 34-mil LDP Spacer: Standard BW uses a 28-mil spacer which easily clogs with organics. The 34-mil spacer creates a wider channel, reducing pressure drop and preventing biological buildup.
2. Hydrophilic Coating: The membrane surface is chemically modified to repel organic foulants (like oils and proteins), making it significantly easier to clean during CIP.
Is WD-FR-400 a direct replacement for DuPont Fortilife or BW30XFR?
Yes. Our WD-FR-400 is engineered as a 100% drop-in replacement for DuPont FilmTec™ BW30XFR-400/34i and Hydranautics PROC10. It utilizes the exact same 34-mil feed spacer and 400 ft² active area, delivering equivalent anti-fouling performance and 99.5% salt rejection at a fraction of the CapEx.
What is your warranty policy for OEM elements?
We provide a strict 12-Month Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty is voided if failure is caused by improper pre-treatment (Feed SDI > 5), exposure to oxidative chemicals (Free Chlorine > 0.1ppm), or operation beyond the 600 PSI limit.
My system is down. How fast can you ship via air-freight?
For standard 8040 elements in stock, we execute emergency DHL/FedEx dispatches within 48 hours. Elements typically arrive globally in 3-7 days, enabling factory operators to immediately restore their core production lines.
How often should I perform CIP cleaning on FR elements?
CIP frequency depends entirely on your feed water quality. However, as a general rule, you should initiate CIP when normalized permeate flow drops by 10-15%, or when normalized pressure drop increases by 15%. Thanks to the 34-mil spacer, FR elements typically extend the time between CIPs by 2x to 3x compared to standard BW elements.
How do you guarantee the quality of your OEM membranes before shipping?
Every single WANDONG OEM element undergoes rigorous testing at our 50,000m² ISO 9001 facility. We perform 100% vacuum decay testing for mechanical integrity and batch-test performance (salt rejection and flow rate) according to ASTM D4516 standards. A formal QC certificate is included in every box.
