Process Engineer's Note: Osmotic Pressure Limits

Unlike standard RO, DTRO recovery rates in landfill leachate are strictly dictated by osmotic pressure rather than fouling. As permeate is extracted, brine concentration spikes exponentially. System design must ensure the final concentrate's osmotic pressure never exceeds the module's 120-bar mechanical limit to prevent zero-flux conditions.

// MODULE-04 / MECHANICAL COMPATIBILITY

Precision Engineered.

WANDONG DTRO modules are manufactured to precise European dimensional standards. Whether you are replacing a single module or retrofitting an entire containerized plant, our hardware aligns perfectly with your existing high-pressure manifolds.

// MODULE-05 / ENGINEERING ANATOMY

Deconstructing the Open Channel.

Why does a standard spiral wound RO membrane fail in landfill leachate within hours, while DTRO runs for years? The secret lies in the patented Disc Tube architecture.

3D Exploded View of DTRO Module Discs and Cushions
Disc Tube Architecture

1. Open Channel Dynamics (No Mesh)

Unlike spiral wound membranes that use a tight plastic mesh (spacer) which traps solids, DTRO utilizes a 2.0 mm open channel. Suspended solids and biomass simply cannot be trapped, allowing it to handle SDI levels up to 15.

2. ABS Hydraulic Deflector Discs

Molded ABS spacing discs separate the membrane cushions. Their patented surface geometry forces the feed water into a highly turbulent, 180-degree reversing flow path. This extreme turbulence constantly scours the membrane surface, providing a self-cleaning effect that prevents scaling.

3. Octagonal Membrane Cushions

Formed from two layers of polyamide membrane ultrasonically welded around the periphery. The octagonal shape prevents dead zones where stagnant water could breed bacteria. Pure permeate collects inside the cushion and flows to the central rod.

4. SUS316L Central Tension Rod

The entire stack of 209 cushions and discs is strung onto a heavy-duty stainless steel central rod and compressed by metal end-flanges. This robust mechanical assembly is what allows the module to withstand a terrifying 120 bar (1740 psi) of hydraulic pressure without rupturing.

// MODULE-06 / OPERATING LIMITS

Extreme Tolerance.

Designed for the worst water on earth. Strict adherence to these parameters ensures optimal performance and validates the warranty.

Maximum Operating Temperature 104°F (40°C)
Maximum Operating Pressure 75 / 90 / 120 bar
Max Pressure Drop (Single Module) 9 bar
pH Range, Continuous Operation 6 - 9
pH Range, Chemical Cleaning (@40°C) 2 - 11
Feed Flow Rate Range 500 - 1200 L/h
Maximum Feed Silt Density Index (SDI) SDI 15 (Open Channel)
Free Chlorine Tolerance < 0.1 ppm

General Handling & Preservation

  • Modules are shipped wet, preserved in a 1.0% SMBS solution.
  • In freezing conditions, 10% Propylene Glycol is added to the preservative.
  • Keep elements moist at all times after initial wetting.

System Startup Protocol

Due to the extreme pressures involved, strict adherence to the startup sequence is mandatory:

  • 1. Low Pressure Flush: Flush the module at low pressure for 15-25 minutes to remove preservative.
  • 2. High Pressure Flush: Increase pressure gradually and flush for 60-90 minutes.
  • 3. Permeate and concentrate obtained from the first hour of operation must be discarded.
// MODULE-08 / SELECTION GUIDE

Application-Based Selection.

DTRO is not selected by TDS. It is selected based on the extreme osmotic pressure and fouling potential of your specific wastewater stream.

// MODULE-11 / PROVEN IN THE FIELD

Powered by WANDONG.

We don't just sell components; we build the heavy-duty systems that rely on them. Our DTRO modules are the beating heart of our own containerized Landfill Leachate plants deployed globally.

The Integrator's Advantage

Because we use these exact modules in our own EPC projects, they undergo rigorous internal quality control that pure trading companies simply cannot match. We stake our entire plant's performance on these elements.

// MODULE-15 / TECHNICAL FAQ & WARRANTY

Hardcore FAQ.
Engineering-Grade Answers.

Can I really just replace the cushions instead of the whole module?
Absolutely. This is the biggest secret in the DTRO industry.

The FRP/Stainless Steel housing and the ABS hydraulic discs do not degrade. Only the polyamide membrane cushions foul over time. By ordering our Cushion Replacement Kit (which includes 209 cushions and all necessary O-rings), your engineers can rebuild the module on-site. This strategy slashes your CapEx by up to 70% compared to buying a complete new module from European OEMs.
Are your cushions compatible with Rochem® and Pall® systems?
Yes. Our DTRO modules and cushions are manufactured to exact dimensional tolerances. They are 100% drop-in replacements for standard Rochem PF modules and Pall DT modules. The cushions will fit perfectly onto your existing tension rods and hydraulic discs.
Why choose DTRO over standard Spiral Wound (8040) RO?
Standard 8040 spiral wound membranes use a tight plastic mesh (spacer) that instantly clogs when exposed to high suspended solids. They require SDI < 5.

DTRO uses an Open Channel (2.0mm) design without any mesh. It can handle SDI up to 15, massive COD levels, and extreme osmotic pressures (up to 120 bar), making it the only viable choice for raw landfill leachate and ZLD concentration.
What is your warranty policy?
We provide a strict 12-Month Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects (such as ultrasonic weld failure on the cushions). The warranty is voided if failure is caused by exposure to oxidative chemicals (Free Chlorine > 0.1ppm) or operation beyond the specified maximum pressure (e.g., running a 90 bar module at 120 bar).
How long do the membrane cushions last in raw landfill leachate?
In typical fresh landfill leachate applications with proper sand filtration and regular CIP cleaning, WANDONG DTRO cushions generally last 2 to 3 years before requiring replacement due to irreversible organic fouling and flux decay.
Do you supply the special torque tools required for module reassembly?
Yes. Proper tensioning of the central rod is critical to prevent leaks at 120 bar. If your field team does not have the required tools, we can supply the exact hydraulic tensioning tools, torque wrenches, and step-by-step manuals along with your cushion replacement kit.
