/ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 2022, a massive copper mining operation situated at 4,200 meters in the Andes Mountains faced a recurring operational nightmare. During the spring thaw, glacial meltwater feeding the camp's reservoir would spike in turbidity, turning the water into thick mud. Their legacy sand filtration systems would clog within hours, halting both mineral processing and domestic water supply for 3,000 workers.

WANDONG ENVIRO was contracted to deliver an indestructible 1,500 m³/day Ultrafiltration (UF) system. Utilizing TIPS (Thermally Induced Phase Separation) PVDF membranes and an altitude-compensated pneumatic backwash system, our containerized plant physically blocks 99.99% of suspended solids and pathogens. The system secured a continuous, crystal-clear water supply, eliminating millions of dollars in weather-related downtime.

/ MODULE 02 — THE RAW REALITY

The site refused to cooperate.

Three constraints that would have killed a standard commercial filter. We documented them on day one.

DEADLY CONSTRAINT · 01
High Turbidity River Water Treatment for Copper Mine
LETHAL TURBIDITY SPIKES

850 NTU Mud Avalanches

During heavy rains and glacial melting, the surface water turbidity spikes from 20 NTU to over 850 NTU. Standard inside-out UF membranes or sand filters would instantly blind, requiring manual digging out of the mud.

DEADLY CONSTRAINT · 02
4200m High Altitude Containerized UF Plant
ALTITUDE: 4,200 METERS

Thin Air & Pump Cavitation

At 4,200m altitude, atmospheric pressure drops by 40%. Standard centrifugal pumps suffer severe cavitation, and air compressors lose efficiency, threatening the critical air-scour backwash process.

DEADLY CONSTRAINT · 03
Eco-Compliant Zero Chemical Discharge UF System
STRICT ECO-COMPLIANCE

Zero Chemical Footprint

The mine operates under strict Andean environmental regulations. Discharging massive amounts of chemical cleaning agents (CIP waste) into the local watershed was prohibited. The system had to clean itself mechanically.

/ MODULE 03 — THE ENGINEERED CURE

We didn't just supply equipment.
We engineered a paradigm shift.

Here is exactly how our engineering team neutralized the site's deadly constraints.

CURE FOR CONSTRAINT 01

TIPS PVDF Outside-In UF

We deployed heavy-duty TIPS (Thermally Induced Phase Separation) PVDF membranes. With an outside-in flow path, the mud accumulates on the exterior of the fibers, preventing internal pore blockage. These fibers possess immense tensile strength and will not snap under heavy solids loading.

CURE FOR CONSTRAINT 02

Altitude-Compensated Hydraulics

We engineered the hydraulic profile specifically for 4,200m. We oversized the feed pump impellers to prevent cavitation and integrated high-displacement Atlas Copco rotary screw compressors to guarantee powerful air-scouring regardless of the thin atmosphere.

CURE FOR CONSTRAINT 03

Kinetic Air-Scour Backwash

To meet strict eco-regulations, the Siemens PLC triggers a vigorous "Air + Water" backwash every 45 minutes. The kinetic energy of the compressed air bubbles violently shakes the mud off the PVDF fibers, restoring 98% of membrane flux without a single drop of chemical cleaner.

/ MODULE 04 — ENGINEERING BLUEPRINT

A physical barrier against nature's worst.

The system relies on absolute physical filtration rather than complex chemistry. The 0.03µm pore size of the UF membrane acts as an impenetrable wall to all suspended solids, colloids, and bacteria.

/ MODULE 10 — VOICE OF CLIENT & TECH Q&A

Words from the men who signed the cheque.

"

Every spring, the glacial melt turns our water source into thick mud. Our old sand filters would choke, and we'd have to halt processing. WANDONG's UF system just eats the mud. The air-scour backwash is incredibly violent but effective. We haven't stopped production once since it was installed.

Q.01 · MEMBRANE BREAKAGE

Won't the mud and grit break the hollow fibers?

+
Standard NIPS membranes might, but we use TIPS (Thermally Induced Phase Separation) PVDF fibers. They have an extremely high tensile strength and an outside-in flow path, making them virtually indestructible even under heavy solids loading.
Q.02 · HIGH ALTITUDE

How does 4,200m altitude affect the system?

+
Thin air reduces pump suction lift and compressor efficiency. We engineered altitude-compensated hydraulics, utilizing oversized impellers for the feed pumps and high-displacement rotary screw compressors to guarantee sufficient air-scour pressure.
Q.03 · BACKWASH

How often does it need to backwash?

+
The Siemens PLC continuously monitors the Transmembrane Pressure (TMP). During normal operation, it triggers a standard air-water backwash every 30-45 minutes. During extreme turbidity spikes, the PLC automatically increases the frequency to protect the flux.
Q.04 · EXTREME COLD

How do you prevent the system from freezing at night?

+
The entire plant is housed in a modified 40HQ container insulated with 75mm polyurethane panels. We integrate industrial space heaters and automated heat-tracing cables on all external piping, ensuring the water never drops below 5°C even during Andean blizzards.
Q.05 · CHEMICAL-FREE CLEANING

Can it really run without chemical cleaners?

+
For 95% of its operational time, yes. The kinetic energy of the compressed air-scour physically shakes the mud off the PVDF fibers. A mild chemical enhanced backwash (CEB) is only triggered by the PLC when organic fouling reaches a critical threshold, strictly minimizing chemical discharge.
Q.06 · INSTALLATION

We lack local engineers. How do we install it?

+
100% Plug & Play. We finish all internal piping and electrical wiring in our China factory. Your local plumbers simply connect the raw water inlet and power supply. We also provide 24/7 video guidance.
