/ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Landfill leachate is widely considered the most toxic and difficult wastewater on the planet. In 2022, a major municipal landfill in the Middle East faced severe environmental fines as their leachate ponds reached maximum capacity. The raw liquid was a thick, black sludge with COD exceeding 25,000 mg/L and Ammonia levels over 2,000 mg/L. Standard RO membranes would irreversibly foul within 24 hours.

WANDONG ENVIRO was contracted to deploy our ultimate anti-fouling weapon: The DTRO (Disc Tube Reverse Osmosis) System. Operating at a crushing 90 Bar of pressure, this specialized open-channel membrane architecture physically forces pure water out of the toxic sludge without clogging. Housed in a tropicalized, dual-HVAC container to survive 55°C desert heat, the system successfully reduced COD to under 50 mg/L, saving the municipality millions in hazardous waste transport fees.

The leachate was a highly concentrated, viscous cocktail of heavy metals, organics, and ammonia (COD > 25,000 mg/L). Conventional spiral-wound RO membranes would instantly suffer from bio-fouling and scaling, rendering them useless within a day.

Sited in the middle of a desert, summer ambient temperatures routinely hit 55°C. High-pressure pumps generate immense internal heat. Without aggressive thermal management, the PLC would fry and the membrane pores would permanently expand and fail.

Leachate emits toxic hydrogen sulfide and VOCs. Manual cleaning of blocked filters or membranes would expose operators to severe health risks. The system required a 100% hands-free, automated Clean-In-Place (CIP) protocol.

Open-Channel DTRO Cushions

We deployed specialized Disc Tube RO (DTRO) modules. Unlike standard RO, DTRO uses an open 2mm flow channel and deflector plates that create extreme fluid turbulence. This physical scouring action makes it virtually impossible for suspended solids to stick to the membrane.

Tropicalized HVAC Integration

The entire 90-bar pump station and PLC were housed in a custom 40HQ container coated with heat-reflective ceramic paint. We integrated dual-redundant industrial HVAC units, locking the internal ambient temperature at a safe 25°C, regardless of the desert inferno outside.

Hands-Free Automated CIP

We engineered a closed-loop Clean-In-Place (CIP) skid controlled by the Siemens PLC. When pressure differentials indicate fouling, the system automatically halts production, injects acid/alkali cleaners, flushes the DTRO stacks, and resumes operation. Zero human exposure to toxic waste.

/ MODULE 04 — ENGINEERING BLUEPRINT

A 90-bar extrusion process built for extreme survival.

Treating leachate is not filtration; it is brute-force extrusion. We utilized heavy-duty plunger pumps to drive the raw sludge through the DTRO cushions at 90 bar, physically ripping pure H₂O molecules away from the toxic organics.

    Acid dosing drops pH to 6.0 to prevent carbonate scaling. Sand filters remove bulk suspended solids.

    1st Stage DTRO (90 Bar)
    The heavy lifter. Removes 98% of COD, BOD, and heavy metals. Generates the primary clean permeate.

    2nd Stage DTRO Polishing
    Treats the permeate from the 1st stage to ensure strict compliance with municipal discharge limits.

    Strips residual dissolved gases (like CO₂) to stabilize the final effluent pH before discharge.

Why can't I just use a standard RO system for leachate?

Standard spiral-wound RO membranes have a very narrow feed channel (typically 28-34 mil) with a mesh spacer. Leachate is full of sticky organics and suspended solids that will instantly clog this mesh, rendering the membrane useless. DTRO (Disk Tube RO) uses an open channel design with no mesh spacer, allowing highly polluted water to flow freely without blocking.

What do we do with the concentrated brine from the DTRO?

The DTRO process typically recovers 70-80% of the leachate as clean water. The remaining 20-30% is concentrated brine. Depending on local regulations, this brine can be re-injected back into the landfill (to accelerate methane production), sent to a thermal evaporator (MVR) for zero liquid discharge (ZLD), or solidified with cement/fly ash.

How long do DTRO membranes last?

With proper automated CIP (Clean-in-Place) protocols, DTRO membrane cushions typically last 3 to 5 years even in harsh leachate applications. Unlike spiral RO elements which must be replaced entirely, DTRO allows you to open the pressure vessel and replace only the individual damaged membrane cushions, significantly reducing long-term OPEX.

How does the system survive 55°C heat and abrasive sandstorms?

The entire plant is housed in a modified, fully sealed ISO container. We apply heat-reflective ceramic coatings to the exterior and integrate dual-redundant industrial HVAC units. The container maintains a strict NEMA 4 / IP55 seal, preventing any fine desert sand from entering the PLC cabinet or fouling the high-pressure pump mechanics.
